White Pathology and the Philistine Spirit
This article argues that White pathology—the greed, theft, deceit, and violence that marked the transatlantic slave trade—has never left. It is now throttling forward through the President, the Supreme Court, White Evangelicals, and the Republican Party. Drawing on the biblical story of Dagon, the Philistine god who repeatedly fell before the Ark of the Covenant, the author contends that the MAGA movement's god is similarly impotent, requiring constant propping up through lying, cheating, and stealing. The Philistine spirit—capturing what is sacred, demanding that the universe bow to a fiction—is the operating system behind gutting the Voting Rights Act, gerrymandering, voter suppression, and the Big Lie. Dr. Frances Cress Welsing's Cress Theory of Color-Confrontation is cited to explain that White behavior is rooted in a fear of genetic annihilation, a fear vindicated by demographic data showing White people are becoming redundant. White Replacement Theory is embraced by 50–54% of White Evangelicals. Motivated by desperation, they flail shamelessly against the inevitable, burning down the house of democracy rather than suffer equality and equity. The bastardization of "woke" into a pejorative exposes their self-negation: to be woke simply means to be aware, yet they cling to cognitive nonchalance and emotional detachment disguised as polite indifference. The drowning man grabs a straw—not a milkshake straw, but the flimsy kind floating beneath a fallen idol. The Philistine spirit does not surrender to reality; it re-erects the lie and calls it piety. When Dagon falls the second time—head severed, hands broken—that is the Big Steal: a movement that cannot win fairly decapitates democracy itself, severing the hands of Black voters and the heads of Black representatives. The only way they can compete is to cheat. They are not merely cheating; they are cheaters, face down in the dust, clutching a straw, while the truth stands unshaken in their temple—undefeated, unmoved, unimpressed.

It should come as no surprise to anyone paying attention that we are witnessing the blasphemous display of White pathology, unchecked. Whether from a religious or political vantage, the impotence of their god is shamelessly evident. The greed, theft, deceit, and violence that marked the transatlantic trafficking of Africans never left—it is now throttling forward at the behest of the President and the Supreme Court, as complicit as the White Evangelicals and the Republican Party who kneel beside them.
For people who claim to be restoring a Christian nation, their god apparently needs propping up even more than the Philistine god Dagon in Ashdod. After the Philistines captured Israel’s Ark of the Covenant, they hauled it into Dagon’s temple. The next morning, the statue of Dagon lay “fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord.” They hoisted it back upright, but the following morning it had not only fallen again—it was broken, head and hands severed on the temple threshold. Like the older lady in the Medic-alert commercial, Dagon had fallen and couldn’t get up. Unlike the commercial, the Ark of the Covenant was the cause of the collapse. Proximity to truth toppled the lie.
That same proximity is what the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement cannot survive. To compensate for the impotence of their America-restoring idol, the MAGA collective—supporters, sympathizers, and quiet beneficiaries alike—have returned to the devices of their fore-parents: lying, cheating, and stealing to gut an ideological democracy they never actually believed in. As long as it consolidated power and ladled out privilege, they enthusiastically waved the flag. But the threat that diversity, equity, and sharing might penetrate that power has left their backsides raw and fully exposed—politically, religiously, ethically, and morally.
Could they have ever guessed that their decapitated Dagon, with severed hands, would need this much frantic assistance to “Make America Great Again?” Under the cosmetic veil of a colorblind legal philosophy and the pious talk of election integrity, the White Evangelical Church has supported gutting the Voting Rights Act of 1965 since its inception. The translation is blunt: they do not want Black people to vote, and by extension they intend to eliminate Black representation from the House and the Senate.
Freud may have been onto something. He theorized that humans are driven by a survival imperative, one expression of which is aggression, triggered by both internal and external stimuli. A hallmark of White pathology is heightened threat sensitivity—the way an innocuous perceived threat can incite an irrational response. In 1970, Dr. Frances Cress Welsing published her “Cress Theory of Color-Confrontation,” later released in 1991 as The Isis Papers: The Keys to the Colors. She theorized that White behavior is rooted in a fear of genetic annihilation. Demographic data has since vindicated her claim. The April 9, 1990 Time magazine cover story “Beyond the Melting Pot” predicted that “racial and ethnic minorities would collectively outnumber whites for the first time in the 21st century.” Time followed up in 1993 with “The New Face of America,” concluding that interracial marriage would forge a hybrid, “racially ambiguous” American identity. We are seeing that prophetic claim play out in real time.
In short, White people are factually becoming redundant, and despite their pleas before a fallen Dagon, they are, in some measure, victims of their own recessive genes. They are also having fewer children; the average is just below two, and based on current birth patterns, a White woman will have between 1.6 and 1.8 children in her lifetime. Incidentally, Freud’s second motivator of human behavior is sex for reproduction, but I digress. Enter Replacement Theory—more accurately, White Replacement Theory—the fever dream of a deliberate plot to replace White populations in Western nations. It includes voter replacement and White genocide, and according to the Public Religion Research Institute it is embraced by 50–54% of White Evangelicals.
Motivated by desperation, White populations cannot count on faith in a god (Dagon) that keeps face-planting, so they flail openly and shamelessly against the inevitable; there is no accelerant like fear. Casting caution to the wind, their desperation reveals that their emergency far outweighs any fidelity to democracy, decency, and patriotic duty. As I have argued in my book Spitting Into the Wind: White Pathology and Racial Habilitation, to persist down this perilous path is to destroy whatever modicum of humanity remains in them and to mortgage the future of generations yet unborn.
Ironically, the bastardization of “woke” is a salient exhibit of their rabid self-negation. To be woke simply means to be aware—a caution against a zombie-like existence of cognitive nonchalance and emotional detachment. Yet those are the precise symptoms of White pathological resistance. In diverse cultural settings, especially religious ones, it registers as polite indifference, as if to say, “We’re glad you’re here, but we really don’t give a hoot about what you think.” The cognitive nonchalance and emotional detachment are conspicuous—apparently to everyone but the afflicted.
And so, we’re witnessing the dramatic scenes of the ancient proverb: a drowning man grabs at a straw. Not the kind you sip a milkshake through, but the kind that floats on the surface of a river, or perhaps lies on the ground beneath the fallen head of an idol. That is essentially the Philistine spirit in its final, frantic posture—and it is indistinguishable from what we are watching now.
Consider the original Philistine move: capture the Ark of the Covenant not to honor it, but to display it as a trophy of conquest, to subordinate the presence of truth to a god of their own making. Steal what is sacred. Place it in the house of Dagon. Demand that the universe bow to your fiction. That is the spirit that gutted the Voting Rights Act, that redraws districts into electoral silos, that slaps the word “integrity” onto suppression. It is theft dressed as triumph, the Philistine spirit that lies at the root of White pathology.
When Dagon falls the first time, the Philistine response isn’t repentance—it’s propping. Stand the idol back up. Pretend the collapse was an accident. That is the Big Lie. That is the MAGA gospel. That is every gerrymandered map that gets struck down, only to reappear with a new justification to sanitize it. The Philistine spirit does not surrender to reality; it re-erects the lie and calls the effort piety.
And when Dagon falls the second time—head severed, hands broken on the threshold—that is the Big Steal—the scripture is surgical. A god without a head cannot think. A god without hands cannot act. What kind of power is that? Exactly the kind that has to cheat to compete. The decapitated idol is the perfect portrait of a movement that cannot win a fair election on ideas and so must decapitate democracy itself, attempting to sever the hands of Black voters and the heads of Black representatives. The foul Philistine spirit is not a relic; it is the operating system of every statehouse where maps are drawn by fear and cowardice, and every pulpit where polite indifference hums while rights are amputated.
The drowning man’s straw, then, isn’t random. It is what you grab when Dagon’s head is on the temple floor, the Ark is still standing, and the waves are rapidly rising. The straw is the gerrymander. The straw is the voter purge. The straw is the “colorblind” jurisprudence that pretends not to see the flood. But a straw can no more save White political power from the tide than a headless idol can evict the truth from its own temple. The Philistines learned that the Ark does not need defenders—it needs only to be present. And the multiracial democracy they fear is already present, already in the chamber, already dismantling the old gods with the quiet conquest of the census.
Many Black people—lulled into social complacency—have underestimated the depths of White pathology and how far fearful, desperate White people will go to cling to power—and that includes all those not up in arms about the Big Lie and the Big Steal. There is nothing rational about it. The only way they can compete is to cheat. Let that sink in. The only way they can compete is to redraw congressional districts and suppress the vote. That is not politics; that is the Philistine spirit crawling on all fours, scrambling among the shattered fragments of Dagon, clutching a straw and calling it deliverance.
They are not merely cheating; they are cheaters, and history testifies they have never been anything different. Motivated by the fear of redundancy, they have resorted to what they know best. They are cheaters—face down in the dust, clutching a straw, while the truth stands unshaken in their temple. And the Ark of truth remains. Undefeated! Unmoved! Unimpressed! Standing in their temple while their god lies in shattered pieces beneath it.
